Preventing Identity Theft
Credit scores from credit bureaus have all too often been ruined when an identity thief strikes. Using personal information to make purchases and take out loans is a person’s worst nightmare in terms of their credit line. However, there are steps that can be taken to reduce the risk that an individual will fall victim to the dreaded identity theft. Shred Criminals are not above digging in dumpsters or garbage cans in search of any personal information or sensitive documents that could allow them to pull off a successful identity theft. Thus, it is important that such documents be shredded or burned so that no matter who rummages through any dumpster, no sensitive information will found. Internet When making transaction online, be sure that the network is secure and that the vendor is a well known and reputable company. New or start up businesses may be absolutely fine or they may not. Therefore it is always best to be on the safe side when being an online consumer by choosing vendors that are either nationally or regionally known. On Lookers While at the ATM or at a public computer, be watchful of individuals who might wander over a shoulder and stop for a brief moment. These individuals may be attempting to memorize the keystrokes of a PIN number or social security number instead of reading that magazine they seem to be holding up. Some criminals will even pretend to talk on cell phones while instead capturing a PIN number or social security number keystroke on their camera phone or video. Digital Destroying Destroy not only paper documents that may contain sensitive information but digital copies of such information as well. Before throwing out an old computer or outdated data storage disks be sure that all memory is wiped clean of any personal information that could give an identity thief a way in. Post Office Lastly, it is always a good idea to drop paid bills off directly at the post office because an identity thief could rummage through a mailbox and turn up personal information in envelopes containing paid bills. By following these steps, individuals will help to protect their credit line and save themselves the hassle of having to dig themselves out of a credit hole because of an identity theft. info@creditbureaubiz.com |
